Sio is a Kenyan artist who seamlessly blends naturalistic expressionism with self-discovery. She is heavily invested in experimentation and discovery of new techniques in her work.
Sio works in painting, sculpting and layering textures in printmaking, where her focus is to create emotive work that resonates with her innermost feelings; exploring the intricate dance between personal liberation and her surrounding world.
Themes in her artwork delve into women's life experiences, femininity, and connection to nature.. Sio has explored these in series such as "Culture of Silence," "Muffled Voices," “Blue Gold” and "Tsavo" series exploring abuse, resilience, and connection to nature.
Her two studios are mirrors of the contrasting environments which shape her creative process. In bustling Nairobi, amid the hustle and chaos, her studio becomes a manifestation of creative disorder. Conversely, in the tranquil landscapes of Taita, her studio transforms into a sanctuary of peace. Nature's serenity prevails and Seba’s art unfolds; resonating with the soothing sounds of a nearby waterfall. Solitude is her chosen companion, a deliberate means to commune with her thoughts and feelings.
Sebawali's artistic exploration extends to mixed media on canvas and paper where she fearlessly employs materials like ink, oil, acrylic, watercolour paints, pencils, and charcoal. Always looking to learn new skills and techniques, she explores sculpting, working with resin, fibreglass, plaster, glass, and wood.
Sebawali's artistic practice is an unapologetic celebration of freedom—freedom from and towards everything around her. Her work invites the audience to embark on a journey of liberation and self-discovery through the vibrant tapestry of her art.
