Contemporary Painting by Kenyan Women – Experiences and Perspectives Exhibition in Warsaw, Poland
The recognition of contemporary African art often traces its origins to the liberation from colonial rule, gaining momentum with the creation of the iconic work of neo-traditionalism, "Man with a Bicycle," in the 1960s by the Yoruba people in Nigeria. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in this trajectory, particularly in East African art from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, which has matured and gained visibility in the art world as a medium for defining contemporary African identity.
The exhibition "Contemporary Painting by Kenyan Women – Experiences and Perspectives" aligns with the current trend of interest in East African art, focusing on women and reflecting the increased visibility of women in the Kenyan and African artistic scene, traditionally dominated by men. Sebawali Sio was honored to be one of the incredible women chosen to represent Kenya in this exhibition in Warsaw, Poland.
